Afforestation to climate change and re-greening our planet.
Tree-Hugger supports afforestation organizations because planting a tree is an inexpensive and effective means of drawing excess CO2 from the atmosphere. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.”
Trees help reduce the greenhouse effect by directly absorbing CO2 - the primary greenhouse gas - from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. Forests support up to 90 percent of known terrestrial species and offer a variety of habitats for plants, animals and micro-organisms. Trees, shrubs and turf also filter air by removing dust and absorbing other pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension.
If you would like to plant a tree with VGF, a single NPR 500 donation funds the collection of the seed, preparation of soil, planting, tending the sapling until the point at which it can survive on its own.
